Why did they insist on teaching such an outdated arithmetic? I cannot speak for them; I can only guess their thinking. Probably they rigidly believed in the hierarchy of mathematical subjects, 52 II. AS A STUDENT and thought that one had to learn a subject completely before proceeding to the next higher subject. Namely, arithmetic before algebra, Euclidean geometry before analytical geometry, which must be ﬁnished before calculus. Indeed, they spent an incredible number of hours in teaching conic sections.
Anyway I reached the platform and took a rest there, but was trembling in the wind. It made no sense to stay there, so I braved the task of swimming back. Although I was able to reach the shore, I thought that I would be drowned. Luckily I did not contract pneumonia, but at that time I determined not to swim anymore.
