How does the RNA corresponding to a particular gene determine the sequence of amino acids in a protein? Every three nucleotides in RNA specify a particular amino acid in a protein: CGC (a triplet of Cream, Green, and Cream beads in the above example), codes for the amino acid alanine, AAT (a triplet of Amber, Amber, and Turquoise) codes for the amino acid leucine, and so on. The length of a protein is therefore proportional to the length of the RNA that specifies that protein, and hence to the length of the gene that specifies the RNA.
It is for these reasons that it would be fascinating if organic molecules were found on another planet-and Mars seems the only likely candidate (though Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, is another possibility because it contains water)-and brought back for chemical analysis.
