Literature and has troubled not just those writers from the South. In the nineteenth century, one need only think of the major writers to recognize a continuous strain of historical anxiety in their fiction: Cooper's outraged defense of America's indigenous history and natural resources; Hawthorne's guilt-ridden explorations of the Puritan past; Twain's nostalgia for the freedom of the untrammeled land (a fiction based on the illusion of America's paradisal past that Twain was himself instrumental in creating and that found its culminating lyrical expression forty years later in Fitzgerald's famous conclusion to The Great Gatsby); and Henry James' wistful regret for a European cultural heritage that never fully took in the New World.

Literary modernism, and it does suggest the ways in which that heritage has been - must be - assimilated in order to be useful in America. It suggests, furthermore, the essential historical and historiographic concerns of many of her successors. Flannery O'Connor, Saul Bellow, Walker Percy, Robert Coover, and others have continued to work both through and against the tradition that Carrier's fiction so clearly embodies,- in their work, as in Cather's, philosophical thinking inevitably becomes historical thinking.
