To even the odds in any renewed war with the republic, the British needed Indian allies. After the loss of the thirteen colonies, Patrick Murray explained, “We are no longer the first landed power in North America. 40 To keep the Americans away from their lands, the Indian nations of the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley formed a confederation. During the 1780s, by defeating the American army and attacking the settlers in the Ohio Valley, the native confederacy threatened the fragile American union, which needed to expand to survive.

With growing signs that the American confederation was faltering, the British also wanted to be in a strong position for the anticipated collapse. 43 By retaining the border forts and arming the Indians, the British initiated a cold war. Unwilling to recognize Indian initiative, Americans reflexively blamed their frontier troubles on malicious Britons, who allegedly manipulated ignorant savages in an insidious plot to confine and to subvert the republic. Although outraged, the Americans felt helpless to break the British and Indian hold on the frontier.

Ratified in 1781, the original American federal constitution, the Articles of Confederation, prequalified the Canadian provinces as future states. A sense of weakness and a fear for the republic’s security fueled the lingering American longing for Canada. 11 Used to the mild and wet climate of England, the Simcoes had to adjust to the sharp and sudden swings in Canada’s seasons. They arrived at the start of the long, snowy, and bitterly cold winter that locked up the rivers and lakes in ice, shutting down most business.
