However, in 1930 the Anglican Church called the Lambeth conference and decreed that contraception was acceptable under certain conditions. The world had seen the last of these reforms in the lurid light that streamed from the stake in the great square of Brussels. Whatever liturgists may have thought of the 1928 American Prayer Book in the first part of the twentieth century, it has never gained the standing of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer in the Anglican Communion.

By pinning private judgment to the Bible the Reformers started a book religion, i.e. a religion of which, theoretically, law of faith and conduct is contained in a written document without method, without authority, without an authorized interpreter. Add to justification by faith alone the doctrines of predestination to heaven or hell regardless of man's actions, and the slavery of the human will, and it seems inconceivable that any good action at all could result from such beliefs.

It is one of the most popular forms of prophecy belief in the United States (Prothero 2008: 217). We should rather sympathise with the ministers who violently usurped her livings and pulpits in the name of pure religion then left in protest when Protestantism re-triumphed! Now the ex-monk has found the right road, doubtless thinks Dornemann, and bids fair to follow it. Luther might have written all this, though to him the Church was more than a school, and the word of God more than a mere matter of teaching.

His wealth did not enable him to maintain so numerous a retinue as Duke John, but his gallant bearing, ready address, and skill in theological discussion gave him a grand position. After Mary's death in 1558, it became the primary source for the Elizabethan Book of Common Prayer, with subtle if significant changes only.
